Zeon releases a new grade of Cyclo Olefin Polymer that will drive further advances in optical lens materials for AR and VR and contribute to realizing a digital society

Zeon Corporation (Zeon; head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Tetsuya Toyoshima) launched a new grade of Cyclo Olefin Polymer (COP, product names: ZEONEXⓇ and ZEONORⓇ), its proprietary specialty plastic, in September 2024. Featuring significantly lower birefringence than that of other products and excellent resistance to light and heat yellowing, the new grade is expected to see growing demand, particularly as a material for optical lenses.

Zeon developed the new grade, ZEONEX® 360R, specifically for optical lenses requiring low birefringence. This grade is expected to be used primarily in AR and VR glasses, head-up displays, and projector lens components. ZEONEX® 360R stands out for its (1) low birefringence, (2) light resistance, and (3) heat yellowing resistance. Notably, we have succeeded in limiting birefringence to roughly one-third of that seen in conventional products.

Zeon has been meeting diverse needs by offering a broad lineup of products for optical lenses that leverage the superior properties of COP, such as high transparency and low water absorption. The addition of this new grade will make it possible to create optical lenses that offer even more beautiful and clear visuals while maintaining high durability, which will contribute to realizing a fulfilling digital society and improving the quality of life for people.

The new grade, ZEONEX® 360R, will be showcased at the High-performance Plastic Expo during the Highly-functional Material Week that will be held from October 29 to 31 at Makuhari Messe. At this event, we will exhibit COP products that are being widely used for optical, semiconductor, and medical applications in addition to ZEONEX® 360R.
